Care Into Currency for an “Unseen Workforce”

Background

Family caregivers are the unsung heroes of Alzheimer’s and dementia care — the ones ensuring medications are taken, appointments are made, and love is never in short supply. Their work, often unpaid and invisible, holds the health system together.

The Approach: The Head + The Heart

We. and Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. collaborated with Salary.com to create the Family Caregiver Salary Calculator, a tool that quantified the worth of family caregiving. Caregivers were empowered to see the tangible value of their essential work. Their personal sacrifice and societal impact were validated. They felt seen, valued and heard.

The Impact: Redefining the Value of Family Caregivers

By putting real numbers on the hidden contributions of this indispensable workforce, Otsuka helped bring some welcome attention to the issue. The campaign drove thousands of caregivers to the calculator in the first week alone, and ignited a national conversation, with the calculator first being featured in an exclusive CBS News package, with coverage across CBS Mornings Plus, CBSNews.com and 34 local stations. Stories on Yahoo! News, MSN, Medical Economics and FiercePharma followed.

“The compensation calculator enables this community to put a number to their time and immense contribution, which I hope will ignite a rallying cry of support.”
