Nature-Based Learning to Improve Student Wellbeing

Hintergrund

Many children today grow up with limited access to nature, despite its proven benefits for wellbeing. Partnering with WWF, We. co-created a programme to help primary schools incorporate nature into everyday learning and play.

The Approach: Co-Design for a Flexible, Robust and Meaningful Solution

We used our Path to Impact framework to ground the approach in robust evidence-based practice that would inspire behaviour change.

Co-design was central: Through consultations with WWF staff, teachers, parents and young people, ideas were iterated and stress-tested. Combined with literature and competitor reviews, this informed Happy by Nature — a programme designed to spark curiosity, connection and care for the natural world while highlighting its wellness benefits.

The initiative supports schools and families through free toolkits for nature-based play and learning, inspiring content for pupils, and funding opportunities to help schools green their outdoor spaces and foster daily connections with nature.

The Impact: Expanding Access and Advancing Nature-Based Learning in Schools

Happy by Nature aims to help 1 million children experience nature daily by 2028, prioritising those who need it most. Launched in September 2025, the programme has seen strong engagement. More than 7,000 teachers signed up in the first three months, exceeding the year’s target, and over 2,000 teachers registered for the first live lessons with Steve Backshall.

“Partnering with We. helped us overcome barriers to nature-based learning, co-creating a programme with educators and children for lasting positive change in schools.”
